This settlement, located on the trade route between two continents, experienced many natural disasters and wars throughout the history. It was destroyed and re-built 9 times. The city, which was supposedly founded about 5000 years ago, served as an important settlement centre about 3500 years long.

The Homeric Troy was first unearthed in 1868 by Heinrich Schliemann, who carried out excavations based on information he obtained from the Iliad. Thus, he became very famous for making the legendary city of Troy a reality and known by everyone.

The Troy region, which is very important for the European history and literature, was declared an "Ancient National Park" in 1996 and included in the World Heritage Site list. Currently, a multinational team headed by scientists from the University of Tübingen, Germany, continues to carry out archaeological excavations and surveys at the ancient city of Troy.
